The rules as GOV.UK states them for the 2026 to 2027 tax year, checked on 1 October 2026.
£20,000
You can save up to £20,000 in ISAs each tax year, in one account or split across several. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Interest and growth inside an ISA are tax-free.
£12,000
From 6 April 2027, no more than £12,000 of the yearly £20,000 can go into cash ISAs. The rest can still go into stocks and shares ISAs. If you're 65 or over, the cash limit stays at £20,000, from the start of the tax year you turn 65.
£4,000
You can open a Lifetime ISA if you're 18 or over and under 40, and pay in up to £4,000 a year until you're 50. That £4,000 counts towards your £20,000 allowance.
25% bonus
The government adds 25% to what you pay in, up to £1,000 a year. Pay in the full £4,000 and you get £1,000 on top.
£450,000
You can use it towards your first home if the property costs £450,000 or less, you buy at least 12 months after your first payment in, and you buy with a mortgage. You can also take it out from age 60.
25% charge
Take money out for any other reason and you pay a 25% withdrawal charge on what you take out. That's more than the bonus: pay in £800, get £200 bonus, take out the £1,000 and you get back £750. There's no charge if you're terminally ill with less than 12 months to live.
